Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) joined officials from the Virginia Division of Mines, Minerals, and Energy in Lebanon today to announce a $3,199,553 grant to create an industrial site in Russell County adjacent to additional sites being prepared for industrial use. The funding comes from a pilot program to reclaim abandoned mine land Griffith championed. He issued the following statement:
“Today’s announcement highlights how reclaiming abandoned mine land can provide a boost to our economy. Over $3 million will be provided to ready a site for industrial use adjacent to additional sites being prepared for industrial use. The project will create jobs and lead to new economic activity in Russell County. I am glad to see the funding I fought for in the House of Representatives go to this worthy project.”
“We are here some 63 years after this site was first occupied with an opportunity to make this property one of the commonwealth’s great industrial sites. In May of 1955, this site began its journey to become the largest prep plant in North America, and we are confident this site will be great again. With the existing infrastructure of power, gas, and rail the only thing that was missing was a vision and a partner – we found both with William Wampler and his team at Russell County Reclamation. We are excited about the vision of his team and through it, we can transform this property back into a great industrial mega site that will be home to hundreds of new jobs” stated Russell County IDA chairman Ernie McFaddin.
